O místico
acrylic on canvas 200 cm x 100 cm planos
mixed media on canvas 170 cm x 100 cm These are two works from a series that explores the theme of mysticism and the poly-faceted ways in which Man manifests his belief in a universal life force, through the study of form and non-form. I have drawn inspiration in particular from anthropological research into indigenous worldviews, as well as from Buddhism and other Asian philosophies. These great traditions have made me rethink and question the commonly-held Carthesian distinction between body and soul, material and spiritual or form and non-form. By experimenting with texture and colour fields and integrating figurative and abstract expressionism, forms emerge discretely from the background and are open to interpretation. To transcend mere figuration, I remove parts of the body that are deemed unnecessary like arms, feet, hands, or facial features, thereby breaking down form to create spaces for new possibilities.
